What Kind of Person are You Destined to Be?
And guess what? You get to decide!
by Alexandra Lloyd

printer friendly version

What characteristics do you possess? How would someone else describe you? It may sound morbid, but how do you hope people will remember you after your gone?

The good news is that the answers are entirely up to you! Many traits that you possess are genetic, and many became a part of who you are when you were young and impressionable.

Some traits were fostered by your parents, some by chance and circumstance. If you were raised in an impoverished environment, you may be very frugal. If you were turned on to the joys of learning at an early age, you probably continue to pursue knowledge. Maybe you were born with a high energy level, and can work long hours without tiring. Some of your traits may be negative. Maybe you tend to be unmotivated, or shy in social situations.

You have the power to become the kind of person you’ve always wanted to be. If you’re a big spender, you can become more conservative. If you lack energy, you can become energized. The only prerequisite to re-creating yourself is the desire to do so!

Here are a few tips to help you on the road the new you:
Find a mentor or role-model, someone you look up to and wish to emulate. Visualize yourself as you want to be, with all the characteristics and traits you wish to have.

Consider each of the roles you have (mother, father, sister, brother, aunt, nephew, cousin, daughter, friend…), and think about the traits you wish to emphasize in each situation.

Remember the ideals you used to have about how you wanted to live your life, the things you wanted to do differently than your parents, and what you swore you would never do or say with your children?

Create a statement. Use two or three adjectives to describe the person you want to be. “I am going to live my life each day as a ___________, ____________, ____________, (person, mother, father, daughter, sister, employee….). Tape your statement where you will see it every day, and meditate on it. When you have mastered those traits, pick a few more to work on!

Help your children develop goals using the same techniques! Think about how much further ahead they will be by beginning this process at such an early age!
